OTHER: Mazda MX-30 electric car test drive II
After my recent pleasure of test driving the new Mazda 3, i had the opportunity to test the fully electric Mazda MX-30 for a few days, after my daily Mazda 6 got a minimal rear-end damage caused by a 3rd party. You might remember that me and my wife tested the MX-30 a while ago already, but there we only had a two-hour test-ride. while i had it two full days this time, so think about this post as a kind of add-on.
1. Exterieur:
I’m generally not an SUV guy, and while this is definitely a small SUV comapred to others, it has some great design elements. I really like the front end and the overall proportions, but the rear and looks a bit weird to me.. Also i really don’t get why they had to give this car three different colours on the outside plus some fake aluminum / chrome trim things. Less would have been more in my opinion. Also i don’t get why they put these offroad plastic overfenders and side steps on it.
The interieur is great. good quality, nice fabrics and colour scheme (unfortunately the photo has quite a bit of color ofset). The jog wheel control (which i really like) feels much more high-end then that cheap plastic peace in my 6 / Atenza. I’ve driven a few recent Mazdas now and i really dont understand why they made the center console such a huge flat plastic box. Usually they put a lot of effort in to make things look high-end and there’s a lot of things going on, but t hen this big black plain surface in the middle that feels cheap? Otherwise the car doesn’t feel overloaded, everything makes sense immediately and is easy to find. typical Mazda.
I think about this car as a car for you mom’s or something, and a crucial thing for such a person is to get the kinds easy in and ou tof the rear seats. This is not an easy thing. the B-Pillar less design (also known from the RX-8) is funky, but pretty useless. The rear doors can only be opened if the front doors are open, and you need to close them in the right order. Not a big deal, but also not very useful if oyu ask me.
the battery range of this car with only 200 km/h would make it possible for me to commute daily. i would need to charge it fully every 2-3 days. Definitely possible, but not very practical. Otherwise the ride is really smoooth compared to other electrical cars. The accelartion is not incredible but feels nice. The whole thing feels a bit top-heavy, despite possibly heavy batteries in the lower frame. A bit of sportier springs definitely would’nt hurt for a bit more fun.
Generally i kind of ike it, especially because i like odd and weird things. I wish they’d put this sexy front end on all mazdas, but yeah.. one can dream 🙂 It’s not my first choice for my next car, but I also wouldn’t turn it down if gifted. I guess it’s a good daily driver, but a bit small inside to transport something big every now and then. I’ll keep my 6 for a while, but i defintiely like the spirit over at mazda to go different routes and make things look nice.
