240Z: MK63 Calipers disassembled, other parts prepared for replating

Spent some more time disassembling parts to get them ready for zinc-replating.
Thought while at it, i could take the brake-parts for a replating as well. So i started with the disassembly of my Sumitomo MK63 Solid disk type Ex-works type calipers:

First got the old pads and shims removed. still looking quite good to be honest:

Then spent an hour or so at the garage and disassembled the rest of the calipers. With the help of my trusty little air-compressor and some redneck-skills i managed to get 7/8 cylinders out of the calipers without any damage to me, tools or the calipers.
However the last sucker doesn’t want to come out. Even brought it to a local garage and he used a torch to heat it up but wasn’t able to remove it. we’ll see how i can do that. Any inputs? Otherwise i’ll try another two days having it soaked in WD40, and if that doesn’t work i’ll bring it to a machine shop or so…

Otherwise i was quite successfull, the brakes are in great condition and by the way even learned a lot about brakes (first time working on some brakes so that was quite some fun).
After that i took all the bits from the brakes plus some other i found in my garage and put them in the “re-plating box”. Still need to clean all of this stuff for a few hours before i can send it there (they prefer old rust, grease, rubber-leftovers and paint to be removed.

Hope i find some time again soon..

Hi what’re the torque specs for the caliper half bolts?
I wanted to disassemble mine but didn’t cause I couldn’t find the tightening torque specs for them.

Hi Chris. Unfortunately i don’t have any additional specs. but i assume if you take the standard torque for the factory brakes you’re pretty close.
However. There should be a Maintenance manual in the Skyline C10 manual for it (GT-R version). Also Mr. Alan Thomas (HS30-H in many Z-related forums) has additional documents about them. you may ask him too.
If you get anything i would really be interested in this data too. Working on a big MK63 related post with lots of data and background information but still a lot is missing. so this may take up another efw months.
      Hopes this helps – Nils

        Thanks Nils,
I’ve reached out to Alan Thomas on Facebook as I was pointed to him through gav240z, but he hasn’t responded yet.

My current plan is to go full front and rear mk63 setup as I recently bought 2 pairs of solid calipers. I’m rebuilding the second pair now. Do you know anything about the bracket that goes on the rear hubs for the mk63 calliper? I’ve contacted Nissan Restoration club through my work but they were unable to provide further information. I’ve found the part numbers from the homologation papers for the S30. 44155-N3120 and 44165-N3120.

Let me know if you get an answer. But i think he’s very busy and seems to get a lot of requests. so good luck. I’ve tried several times to get additional information for the MK63 from him.

Regarding the rear disk conversion i don’t have any other information than what is in the homologation paper. either the race-prep manual nor in any of my other documents.

Here’s a preview of the MK63 post i’ve been working on for several months. note that it’s an unreleased draft and still a lot of information is missing and some is not confirmed yet:

(not sure if you can even read it if you’re not a site-admin)

            Thanks for the help Nils!
Unfortunately I cannot view the post yet. I’m keeping a keen eye out for it till you put it out. 🙂
What’s the significance of the bleed screw angle on the MK63s?
I’ve found sets with both straight and angled. I’m guessing one was from a different model car originally?
Other than that both seem to be identical.

I’m building a early 260z 2+2 but your blog and your posts on other forums have helped a lot. Keep up the good work!

I thought you might like to see this since you’re interested in original parts.

I managed to get my hands on this set a while back.

Yeah i think the different bleeder screw positions came from different cars they MK63 was adopted for, but i don’t have a whole lot information.

The post may take another few months until it’s up, still a lot missing (and hard to find).

Uh those mikuni’s look nice! great score, man 🙂

Alan mentioned that the straight nipple calipers was the MK63 20-S model which according to him was the vented calliper from the Datsun competition set. But on the Datsun competition parts schematic catalog the bleed nipple is clearly angled.

I’m nit picking really but it’d be cool to know more about these brakes
